Paying Respect

It’s time to pay respect, that’s what they always say

Today is for the living, as we attend the mass today.

While we honor those, that have gone beyond our presence

It’s really us that gains in closure, it’s only common sense.

But I wish to keep them living, to keep them in my mind

And not to put them down forever and to leave them far behind.

Because it is also always said, that we keep them in our heart

For if we don’t forget them, then they never really part.

So we attend the ceremony, with many of us inside

With relatives and good friends, where our love we cannot hide

Though it seems to you a closure, as it is also said to be

Yet to me it is a hindrance, not the place I want to see

Because I have kept them living, with thoughts and many prayers

To hold them all within me, with both concerns and cares

While they’re living and also after death, I view them quite the same

I hold their faces firmly with me, though I sometimes lose their names

I remember what they’ve done, I recall what they’ve meant to me

And though the meeting is meant to honor, an unpleasant place to be

I see it as something final, and an end that I would not claim

I believe it’s mostly just a change, but to still remain the same

According to the scriptures, their soul will live on and on

And as long as we hold them with us, they will never really be gone.

So I resist this meeting of departure, the closing of a door

Where only in my memory will I see them forevermore.

An End

About Barbara Blackcinder

I am a poet/writer with a hunger for words. There are so many out there that I haven't used yet. They define all reality and especially mine when you read those from me.
